Project idea
Build a wireless controller that decodes TV‑remote RC5/38 kHz IR commands via TSOP1738 to an 8051 microcontroller, which then toggles two DPDT relays (via ULN2003) to reverse a single‑phase induction motor safely.
The system focuses on direction control for applications like exhaust fans by swapping the appropriate motor leads with an interlocked relay scheme to achieve clockwise and anticlockwise rotation.
Project description
An IR receiver module (TSOP1738) captures RC5‑style commands from a standard TV remote and feeds them to an AT89S52‑class 8051 running Embedded C, which drives a ULN2003 to energize 12 V DPDT relays for forward/reverse selection.
Power is supplied by a 12 V/1 A SMPS adapter for the relay coils and a regulated 5 V rail for logic, with the 8051 clocked at 11.0592 MHz for stable serial timing and robust IR decode timing.

Dimensions in cm
Controller electronics (on MB102 + small relay carrier): approximately 12 × 10 × 5 cm, guided by a 10.5 × 9.2 cm class 8051 board footprint and relay clearances.
Front‑panel (switch/LED) clearance can be contained within the same envelope for compact bench use.
Shipping dimensions in cm
Packed kit (controller + adapter + small AC motor): approximately 25 × 20 × 10 cm for safe relay and motor cushioning.
Using a single carton reduces parts damage risk and simplifies logistics for educational kit shipments.
Weight
Typical small shaded‑pole/synchronous demo motors weigh around 0.6–0.8 kg, with electronics under 0.5 kg.
The power adapter adds marginal mass (<0.2 kg), keeping total easily under common courier slab limits.
Estimate project weight
Total packed weight ≈ 2 kg (motor ~0.7 kg + controller/adapter/cables ~0.6 kg) for a representative demo‑scale kit.
