I developed a smart water leak detection system using IoT and embedded systems to identify and alert users about water leakage in real-time. The project involved using water sensors connected to a microcontroller (like ESP8266 or Arduino) which sent alerts via Wi-Fi to a mobile app or cloud platform. This system helps prevent water damage and wastage by providing instant notifications through SMS, email, or app notifications when leakage is detected. It is cost-effective, energy-efficient, and scalable for homes and industries.

 

Components:

  • Water Leak Sensor (e.g., YL-69 or Raindrop Sensor) - Detects the presence of water by sensing moisture or water on the surface.

  • Microcontroller (ESP8266 / ESP32 / Arduino UNO) - Reads sensor data and sends alerts via Wi-Fi.

  • Wi-Fi Module (Built-in in ESP8266/ESP32) - Connects to the internet for sending alerts.

  • Buzzer or LED (Optional) - Gives local alarm or visual indication of a leak.

  • Power Supply - 5V battery or USB power to run the system.

  • Cloud Platform (ThingSpeak / Blynk / IFTTT) - Used to store sensor data and trigger notifications.

  • Smartphone or Web App - Receives real-time alerts from the system.

 

How it Works :

  • Sensor Placement:
    The water leak sensor is installed in areas prone to leakage, such as under sinks, near water pipelines, or behind appliances.

  • Leak Detection:
    When the sensor detects the presence of water, it sends an electrical signal to the microcontroller (e.g., ESP8266/ESP32).

  • Microcontroller Response:
    The microcontroller continuously monitors the sensor. Upon detecting a leak, it:

    • Sends an alert via Wi-Fi to platforms like Blynk, IFTTT, or through email/SMS.

    • Optionally activates a buzzer or LED for local visual or sound alert.

  • User Notification:
    The user receives a real-time alert on their smartphone or computer, enabling quick action to prevent water damage or wastage.
